Report

FINAL: Mercy Mounthawk (Kerry) 68 Gael Cholaiste Mhuire AG (Cork) 79

Brothers James & Scott Hannigan led Gael Cholaiste Mhuire to the U19 A Boys All-Ireland Schools Basketball title. David Lehane also put in a great display for the Cork side, but it was the Hannigan Brothers who did most of the damege, netting 53 points between them.

The Cork & Kerry rivals were neck-and-neck for the first five minutes of the game, but at the end of the First Quarter Gael Cholaiste Mhuire had gone ahead 22-14 thanks in large part to the Hannigan Brothers.

Kevin Moynihan added scores as well as the Hannigans for the Cork side in a big second quarter for the Rebel County side, as Mercy Mounthawk chipped away at a 10-point lead to bring the game back close at the half – 42-35 to Gael Cholaiste Mhuire AG. James Fernane and Daire Kennelly were causing a lot of trouble for the Cork sides’ defense.

Leeroy Odiahi played a pivotal role in the Kerry school getting right back into the match with a huge opening to the third quarter, as Mercy Mounthawk got back to within 4 points. David Lehane, however, scored a crucial 3-pointer at the other end, and went to the line for a four-point bonus play. Gael Cholaiste Mhuire went in at the the end of the third quarter with a comfortable 63-51 lead, though the match was far from over, with Steven Bowler and Philip Corkery netting for Mercy Mounthawk.

Mounthawk continued battling away and reduced the Gael Cholaiste Mhuire lead by three in the final quarter, but it was not enough, as the Hannigans, Moynihan and Lehane continued forcing turnovers and netting big scores, and the Cork side won 79-68 in the end.
