IRB Rugby World Cup Europe Zone Qualifying Round A 1998-1999 [References: 2]

Report

Ireland had to qualify for the IRB Rugby World Cup in 1999, along with England, Scotland, and Italy, as France and Wales were the only countries from the Europe Zone given an automatic Qualification Berth based on prior World Cup performances.

Ireland were placed in Pool 1 and automatically qualified for Round C. Ukraine had qualified from Round A in Pool 1 and went through to Round B with Italy and Georgia who both qualified for Round C.

In round C Ireland started off with an easy 70-0 in over Georgia, and then after Georgia lost to Romania by the slender margin of 23-27, Ireland just had to defeat Romania in their last Pool match to top their Pool but made heavy work of defeating Romania, 53-35 in a high-scoring game, as both teams qualified for the Rugby World Cup.

Meanwhile in Pool 2, England scored a record 110-0 win over Netherlands and then struggled against Italy, winning 23-15 as they both qualified. In Pool 3 Scotland made light work of Spain and Portugal, with Spain getting the other qualification place.

The IRB (International Rugby Board) governs World Rugby Union, and the 1999 World Cup was the fourth edition.
